My Updates

Thank you, everyone!

Monday 1st Jul
Our final totals: 25 supporters gave a total of $1000, enough to provide SIX Buffalo bikes! I have been greatly blessed and encouraged by your support. We doubled my original goal!!! I am so very grateful and I pray that the SIX women and girls who will receive these bicycles will be blessed and will in turn be a blessing to their communities. Until next year!

Over 200 miles for World Bicycle Relief!

Sunday 30th Jun
Today is the last day of this worldwide fundraiser. Ken and I biked on this beautiful afternoon so I could push through to over 200 miles! 330 km - but as an American I think in miles. Donations accepted through midnight! Thanks to each one of you who has donated! I will post at least one more time to let you know how we finish ❤️!

Silent Swans

Friday 28th Jun
Took an early bike ride to ponds along the trail, in search of the resident swans. Have been wanting to get you all a picture of this lovely pair. I look for them every time I ride the trail south. This is the first summer in several years that they have not had a cygnet or two. I hope they and their ecosystem are well.

More than a bike

Thursday 27th Jun
To women and girls in developing countries, a bicycle is more than a bicycle. Here are some things that we are empowering them to access when we provide a bicycle through WBR. What else can you think of?

MATCHING GRANT OPPORTUNITY!

Thursday 27th Jun
World Bicycle Relief announced a 50k matching grant yesterday! Every dollar you give will be doubled! Please spread the word and give what you can. Thanks!

Over 300 km achieved!

Thursday 27th Jun
Just pedaled my 300th kilometer past French Paper Mill! And a couple more. I will keep on riding! Thanks for giving above and beyond!

Stopping to smell (?) the flowers

Monday 24th Jun
Rode with Cycling Club folks to State Line and back this morning and I took some pics of the flower patch someone planted at the updated Ontario Road trailhead. Now is a GREAT time to ride the IN-MI RVT if you like wildflowers!!!!

Trusty steed

Tuesday 18th Jun
My bicycle! All my miles are ridden on this. My commutes, my explorations, Cycling Club with others, riding hard alone to destress. Covid got me into riding (I hadn't ridden outdoors since college before that, although I taught indoor cycling). After three seasons on a used bike I was blessed to find, I bought this. Together we will give four ladies bicycles so they can get to work and school! So they can have this feeling of personal power and self-determination.

Trail shade on a hot day

Monday 17th Jun
Heat wave in SW Michigan! This lovely part of the IN-MI RVT (River Valley Trail) has wetlands on both sides and lots of wildflowers and wildlife. Today saw chipmunks, birds, butterflies, a turtle and a pair of white swans.

Resting up to reach 300!

Saturday 15th Jun
Your support has inspired me to increase my ride goal to 300 km by the end of June! 188 miles! Maybelline and I are taking a rest after my ride today.

Oops! Forgot...

Monday 10th Jun
Led our first YMCA Outdoor Cycling Club of the season this morning and Oops! Forgot to take any pics. Oh, well! We rode 8.75 miles in the breezy summer weather. Lovely weather and good company!

Kal-Haven Trail

Saturday 8th Jun
Made it home from our first ride on the Kal-Haven trail today with the Two-Tired Trekkers (thanks, everyone!)! South Haven to Grand Junction and back, 20 miles. Freshly leveled fine gravel through woods and ghost towns.

NEW GOAL! PLEASE HELP!

Saturday 8th Jun
I'm pedaling to empower women and girls around the world and I have set a new stretch goal to raise $160 on top of my original goal to provide ONE MORE BIKE! I am commiting to ride 40 more miles (64 km) this month to make it happen (a proportional increase to earn that bike!!!). If you have already donated, please consider sharing this with a friend. Thanks so much!!!

From a few weeks ago...

Thursday 6th Jun
Obligatory selfie with Chateau Frontenac in Québec Cité! Nothing to do with biking but thought folks would enjoy. I loved my time there and would go back.

Struggling in the rain

Wednesday 5th Jun
Today I rode the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail westward toward Empire and back in sporadic rain, 15+ miles total. The struggle was in my legs on the steep grades and my bike bell gnome cheers me on. Struggling for a good cause! I do this for fitness and fun but others need a bike to make a living and escape exploitation. Pedaling to empower!!! Am hoping to bust this 200 km out of the water. Thanks for donating!!!

Chasing the sunset

Wednesday 5th Jun
Last night, Ken and I biked to Sleeping Bear Point and hiked up the dune to see the sunset over Lake Michigan. Awfully cloudy but still beautiful.

Glen Arbor Fun

Wednesday 5th Jun
One thing I love about the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail is that it connects major points in the park and local towns. Biked to Glen Arbor with family yesterday and enjoyed the Cottage Book Shop, Leelanau Coffee Roasters, and L'Chayim Delicatessen 😋. And me in this very large chair!

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail

Monday 3rd Jun
Biked 20 miles today at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore - from DH Day camp east to Narada Lake (pictured) and back. A new-to-me section of the trail through woods, farms and wetlands. Lovely!

St Joseph River

Thursday 30th May
I bike over the St Joseph River on my commute and always enjoy the view. Recently milkweed seeds were drifting everywhere over the river like sleepy stars. Riding my bike I can see the changes in nature that I would totally miss in a car.

To Indiana and Back!

Saturday 25th May
Enjoying the sunshine and wildlife on the IN-MI RVT today! Spun over 6 miles from my house in Michigan to across the state line to this solar powered phone charging bench -- and back! Gave recommendations to riders from Goshen (of course to come to Niles!) Add a cool-down spin around the neighborhood and I covered 13+ miles.

Lots of walking

Thursday 23rd May
Check out this lively walk figure in Quebec City! Super pedestrian-friendly city. Car drivers give you the right of way, too. Starting my way home today on the train.

Bikes can go anywhere!

Tuesday 21st May
Saw this in Quebec City today - one way street for all vehicles - except for bikes! 😀 Bikes can go all directions.

Wow!

Tuesday 21st May
Today my fundraising total passed my initial goal of $500! Thanks so much everyone for believing in me and for your generosity. If you haven't had a chance yet, you can still donate! World relief not only provides bicycles to women and girls in great need - they also employ local people to build the bikes!

At Montmorency Falls, Québec

Monday 20th May
We hiked the 487 stairs to the top of Montmorency Falls and walked across the bridge at the top. Then walked down all the stairs; then biked 9+ miles back to Quebec City. Great ride along a dedicated Greenway called the Corridor du Littoral.

Quebec City

Monday 20th May
Rented a bike in Quebec City today to ride to Montmorency Falls with my sons. Just shy of 20 miles round trip!

Swans and Dame's Rocket

Friday 17th May
Squeezed in a 6+ mile ride along our IN-MI RVT (River Valley Trail) this morning and saw swans and this lovely patch of Dame's Rocket. Enjoy!

Thursday commute

Thursday 16th May
The first ride of Pedal to Empower is in the books! My normal Thursday commute to my job at the Y. I will try and post pictures of the beautiful views later on. Stay tuned!

Join me on the journey!

Tuesday 14th May
Follow my journey over the next 6 weeks as I ride in Michiana, Quebec, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and more! Pictures and updates to come!
